Still Planning Away...

Sorry I've been MIA.  Although I've been slacking on blogging, the planning has continued.  Jonny and I have been trying to focus on getting our key vendors booked since a lot of them start to get booked up around 9 months before a wedding date.

Our initial consultation with Cake Creations went well.  No cake tasting, but we had an importunity to talk to the owners about design and pricing.  We're pretty much decided on a whimsical / topsy-turvy cake, that we think will be a fun addition to our rather traditional event.  The cake will look similar to picture (cake they did for a previous wedding), but we're still trying to figure out the colors.  At first we were thinking just blue and red, but there is a chance that the blue fondant will make every one's mouth blue too. So now we are thinking maybe a silver base with red and blue accents.  Thoughts?

After our initial cake consultation with cake creations, we continued to do some research on other cake companies, but a lot of their whimsical cakes didn't look so good.  We decided to email Cake Creations to set up a time to do a cake tasting and if all goes well make a deposit to save our wedding date, it also helped that we'd get 25% off since we got a coupon during the Wedding Cafe Workshop.  Jon emailed them, and a week later we still didn't get a response back.  So the day before we proposed to meet up, Jon email again and then got a reply saying, "sounds good see you then."  Unfortunately, these people do not like to meet on weekend and only have consultations M-Th 9:00am to 5:00pm, so we had to take off early to make the trip to Manoa to see them.  We arrived 10 minutes early to find the office locked and lights off.  We patiently waited for 20 minutes and at 10 after, we gave them a call to see if they were coming. No answer.  So we waited 20 minutes more and gave them another call, still no answer.  After a total of 45 minutes, we gave up.  We were pretty disappointed because at this point we were pretty set on Cake Creations, but no one likes to be stood up.  Jon sent a quick email to the owners and we agreed that if we didn't hear back from them within 24 hours we'd move on. Unfortunately, we've come to the conclusion that pretty much everyone in the Hawaii wedding business sucks at customer service, so we were willing to look past this hiccup if they were prompt to respond and apologetic.

Luckily for them and us, they replied late that evening and said they had a major wedding cake emergency and they were so sorry they stood us up.  Because of their mishap, they agreed to meet with us on the weekend and when we arrived they had 9 different cakes for us to try.  And to our happy surprise, each cake was excellent!  I should have taken a picture of the cute little pieces, but before I knew it, they were gone.  We tried the following flavors: strawberry cake with strawberry cream cheese filling, vanilla butter cake with fresh strawberry mousse, vanilla butter cake with Lilikoi Mousse, Vanilla butter cake with Chocolate Bavarian Mousse, Vanilla Butter cake with vanilla Bavarian mousse, Lemon cake with lemon curd, chocolate cake with Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Fudge, and Carrot cake with cheese cake.  Since we're leaning toward a 4 layer cake, we get to choose four cake flavors with 4 cake fillings.  I think we're pretty sure on the flavors but we're open to suggestions :)  At first we were thinking of making at least one layer chocolate to please our guest, but after tasting all the other flavors, we're thinking its not necessary. If you're lucky, you can taste 3 of the 4 flavors since the 4th layer will be saved for are anniversary or until we need the space in the freezer.

So cake down.  Next up, flowers and save the date cards...

  1. The topsy-turvy is really pretty. I agree that blue teeth might be a bad idea, yet hilarious. You don't have to do chocolate especially with all those yummy choices. Do what you guys thought were the best flavors...chocolate is an everyday flavor so don't feel bad about not pleasing everyone because they can get chocolate at home! So the silver base is for the base color or the base plate?? Red & blue accents would be pretty. Sounds yummy! What type of cake topper...initials, little people?

  2. We were thinking silver as the base fondant cover with Blue and Red designs on top of that. But still not sure. According to the cake lady blue fondant does really leave your mouth too blue, its the blue buttercream that's a concern. Haven't really thought much about the topper, but we definitely dont want anything too extravagant since the design of the cake will be pretty flashy.

  3. I saw silver cakes online & it looks gorgeous! I also read an article by a cake decorator & she tells clients that order cakes with blue fondant to just have their guests pick those parts off. She also said most people don't even eat fondant anyways because it's usually the only part left on their plates. Hmmm I don't know how feasible it would be to tell everyone. Hope this adds to your thoughts! Mmm cake.

  4. With all of the other flavor options, I'd be disappointed if you went with chocolate -- it's so pedestrian. Hah! I'm only partially joking.

I like the design. It makes me think of a Mad Hatter's tea party. It also makes me want to prop it up because it looks like the layers might slide though.
